Overview

Since the introduction of Sony's third generation gaming console, many hackers around the world has had one of their toughest challenges yet. Three years into its life cycles, the Playstation 3 stood as the one and only gaming device (including handhelds) that is unhackable. However, breakthroughs in hacking the Playstation 3 emerged in early 2010, when George Hotz (Geohotz), stated that he has officially cracked the PS3 security. Geohotz went on to claim that the process only took him five weeks. Yet, no major threats emerged for the Playstation 3 until one year later.

The latest development in PS3 hacks occurred just a few weeks ago, when "a hacker group calling itself fail0overflow" came out stating that the new PS3 hacks are so extensive that firmware updates will be obsolete as quick fixes. Fail0verflow boldly assured Sony that the only way to combat the recent hacks is through new hardware.

In January, 2011, an IGN article contributed to the trend by predicting possible catastrophic piracy rates for the Playstation 3. The headline reads "PS3 Piracy Could Eclipse PSP." The article reported that recent security breaches on the PS3 will allow hackers to acquire pirated copies of new titles.
